- Responsible for ensuring a strong job start-up including gaining a complete understanding of the project, the budget, scheduling requirements, and crew requirements prior to project start.
- Manage project scheduling, daily work requirements, daily paperwork, crew, and contract payment items on an ongoing basis.
- Coordinate production goals, targets, and scope, and troubleshoot problem areas with Site Superintendent.
- Provide strong leadership to the crew in keeping with company philosophy of hiring the best and producing a superior product.
- Communicate regularly with Site Superintendents, Project Managers, and General Superintendent when required.
- Review tasks with Site Superintendent to ensure adequate approach and construction methods and discuss any perceived problems in a constructive manner to arrive at a resolution.
- Maintain an open dialogue with employees to ensure they are aware of the daily work plan and remain aware of how their performance measures up to company expectations.
- On an ongoing basis, provide and limit feedback to Site Superintendent and Site HR on the performance of employees.
- Review each project with the Superintendent to ensure adequate approach and construction methods.
- Gain an understanding of the cost codes and pay items applicable to project.
- Know the production rates required to stay on budget for principal activities.
- Ensure adequate time to prepare for your activities prior to commencing.
- Pre-schedule for all materials and resources to arrive before you need them and manage project scheduling to ensure the timely arrival of all materials, resources, and sub-contractors.
- Daily management of the work includes a detailed understanding of the task each worker is assigned and ensuring that s/he understands how to accomplish the task safely and correctly.
- Accurately complete daily paperwork, time sheets and other applicable paperwork with attention to detail.
- Conduct daily tail-gate meetings and monitor crew to ensure safety standards are upheld.
- In collaboration with Grade Person, ensure that accurate redline drawings are updated throughout the course of the job so they can be submitted or handed off at any point in time.
- Monitor cost targets with Superintendent and report any anomalies.
- Monitor and ensure crew breaks are for the allotted time only and that performance expectations are met.
- Stay on top of weather conditions to ensure crew do not show up unnecessarily requiring the payment of 2-hour minimums.
- Ensure all workers wear proper clothing and PPE, and have been full oriented in Health and Safety.
- Ensure a qualified replacement (Grade Person) is designated to act as Foreman in the event s/he will be off the job site for any period of time, or that the job is shut down during her/his absence.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Foreman or Lead Hand in civil construction including earthworks, shoring and underground utilities.
- A 2-year Diploma in a civil construction course is an asset.
- Experience with HCSS, Heavy Job or other field data capture systems considered an asset.
- Must possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written with strong interpersonal and relationship management skills.
- Must possess a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
- Possess a demonstrated ability to lead and direct construction teams, analyze issues, and bring innovative solutions to achieving work plan objectives.
- Possess a basic understanding and interpretation of Job Cost reports.
- Must be a proficient scheduler and planner.
- Must work well under pressure.
- Possess an understanding of a union environment and be willing to join CLAC.
- Current safety tickets an asset.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
