Intermediate Project Manager - Excavation & Earthworks

A well-established excavation and earthworks contractor operating throughout Alberta.

The company specializes in bulk excavation, mass earthworks, site development, and civil construction for industrial, commercial, and infrastructure projects.
 
With a strong equipment fleet and experienced field crews, this contractor is known for delivering high-production work safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

The organization offers a practical, no-nonsense environment where Project Managers are closely connected to the field and play a key role in project success.

The Opportunity
We are seeking an Intermediate Project Manager to manage excavation and earthworks projects from pre-construction through completion. This role is ideal for a PM with strong civil fundamentals who enjoys being involved in planning, production, and cost control, and is ready to take ownership of multiple active projects.


Key Responsibilities
 
Project Management & Delivery

  • Manage multiple excavation and earthworks projects from award to close-out
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, and work plans
  • Monitor job costs, production rates, and project forecasts
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget
Pre-Construction & Planning
  • Participate in tender reviews, budgeting, and project handover
  • Support estimating with constructability reviews and excavation sequencing
  • Plan logistics, access, haul routes, and material movement strategies
Construction Phase
  • Work closely with Superintendents and Foremen to drive field production
  • Coordinate equipment, crews, subcontractors, and material suppliers
  • Resolve field issues efficiently while maintaining schedule and cost targets
  • Maintain regular communication with clients, inspectors, and consultants
  • Manage change orders, extras, and scope adjustments
Financial & Contract Administration
  • Track job cost reports, forecasts, and productivity metrics
  • Review and approve invoices, progress claims, and subcontractor payments
  • Ensure contract compliance and proper project documentation
Health, Safety & Environmental
  • Promote and enforce company HSE policies and Alberta OH&S regulations
  • Ensure environmental controls and site compliance are maintained
  • Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and incident investigations
Project Close-Out
  • Manage deficiencies, final inspections, and turnover documentation
  • Ensure timely completion of close-out requirements
  • Participate in post-project reviews and continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications & Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in excavation, earthworks, or civil construction
  • Previous experience as a Project Manager or Senior Project Coordinator
  • Strong understanding of bulk excavation, mass haul, grading, and site development
  • Experience managing heavy equipment fleets and production-driven crews
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and fast-paced schedules
  • Strong financial, scheduling, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities
