Scope of the Position
The Estimator will be responsible for assisting the Lead Estimator in preparing complete, accurate estimates for all contract types. Under the guidance from the Lead, the Estimator works with clients, architects/engineers, subcontractors/ suppliers to plan cost factors for building projects; analyzes construction documents, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labour estimates for projects.
Duties, Responsibilities, Authority and Accountabilities
Operational Performance and Best Practices:
- Assist with the preparation of full cost estimates on conceptual, design-build or general tender work.
- Prepares and issues quotation packages to subcontractors and suppliers, solicits quotes for materials, tracks and follows up on quotation requests, and evaluates quote submissions.
- Review proposal specifications, engineering drawings and blueprints to understand the scope of work and required contents of the estimate.
- Prepare discipline estimates by calculating complete take-off for each of scope of work.
- Manage time to ensure that bids are completed and delivered on time.
- Prepare detailed accurate material, labor, equipment, subcontracts, construction facilities, etc. estimates.
- Foster relationships with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Attend on-site pre-bid/proposal conferences and site visits.
- Assist in development and review subcontractor scopes of work and accept, review, and analyze subcontractor quotes for best value.
- Prepare project bid status reports and ensure compliance with all specifications and contract Statements of Work and Bid Invitations.
- Assist the Lead Estimator in presenting cost estimates to meet customer proposals, providing consideration for general and special conditions.
- Prepare scope specifications and requirements, and inputs for project schedules, perform quantity takeoffs, prepare cost summary sheets, and input quantities into estimating software
- Maintain an accurate, current database cost codes of accounts for historical data
- Review Company jobs and compare on a timely basis to as-sold estimates to confirm the accuracy of the estimate.
- Utilize the appropriate company and industry historical data for pricing estimates.
- Perform tasks and other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Reporting Responsibilities and Authorities from Supervisor
- Reports directly to the Lead Estimator for all matters relating to estimating.
- Works with clients, architects/engineers, subcontractors/ suppliers.
Education, Skills and Knowledge
- 1-3 years related heavy civil construction estimating experience.
- Completion of a University Degree/Technology Diploma in Civil Engineering, or a combination of education and related industry experience.
- Experience in working with spreadsheets, databases, estimating packages, take-off packages and scheduling packages.
- Strong computer skills and ability to use department software is necessary.
- The ability to use HCSS Heavy Bid is considered an asset.
- Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word and Outlook).
- Experience in AutoCAD, Primavera and MS Project an asset.
- Previous experience with job task planning, decision making and problem-solving.
- Ability to assume responsibility and to interface and communicate effectively with others, have strong interpersonal skills and be self-motivated.
