Date: 09 Jan 2017

The total value of new construction contracts signed in 2016 was down by nearly a fifth on 2015.

During the whole of 2016, £43.55bn of construction contracts were signed, according to data collected by The Builders’ Conference. This is 23% down on the £56.59bn of contracts that were signed in 2015.

At the same time, the number of contracts awarded during 2016 was down by 8.5%.

The decline was particularly marked at the back end of the year, with just £2.63bn of new business signed in December, making it the slowest month of the year for signatures.

Coming out on top of The Builders’ Conference BCLive contracts league table for 2016 was Laing O’Rourke, which – although recently reporting £246m losses for the year to March 2016 – booked £1,598m of new work in the UK during 2016.

Galliford Try was close behind in second place with £1,544m.

A total of eight contractors signed more than £1bn worth of new work during the year, as the table below shows.
