Financial Controller - Construction

Position Overview:

Our client is seeking an experienced Financial Controller with a background in the mechanical sector to oversee financial operations and ensure fiscal responsibility across our organization. Based in Toronto, Canada, you will play a crucial role in managing financial planning, reporting, budgeting, and analysis to support strategic decision-making and operational efficiency. You will also oversee a team of financial and office professionals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard financial assets and ensure accurate reporting.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Monitor cash flow, budgets, and financial performance metrics, providing timely analysis and insights to senior management.
  • Collaborate with project managers and department heads to track project costs, profitability, and budget variances.
  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal financial regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Lead annual budgeting and planning processes, working closely with executive management and department heads.
  • Evaluate and implement financial systems and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy of financial reporting.
  • Prepare ad-hoc financial analyses and reports as required by senior management.
  • Supervise and mentor finance team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably in the mechanical engineering or construction sector.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and financial analysis techniques.
  • Experience with ERP systems and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with project management software is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and provide actionable insights.
  • Proven leadership and team management abilities, with a track record of fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
