We are partnered with a reputable general contractor in the GTA, who are seeking a Health & safety manager to join their team.

Primary Location: Toronto, ON (Multiple Project Sites and Head Office)

The Role:

Responsible for managing, monitoring and updating all aspects of Occupational Health and Safety Program. Ensures Head Office, Yard Operations and Field Operations are in compliance with all local and provincial requirements pertaining to workplace health and safety. Conducts detailed inspections of the
workplace to ensure compliance with the companies Safety Program. Demonstrates ability to manage workplace safety, identify unsafe conditions and acts, propose solutions to prevent worker injuries. Acts in an advisory capacity on Employee/Labor Relation issues regarding disability management. An active advocate of Health & Safety within the Industry.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Compliance: Manages the implementation and adherence to all aspects of Health and Safety for the Head Office, Yard Operations and Field Operations by ensuring safety guidelines and policies and procedures are adhered to by all employees, contractors, and visitors. Coordinates the establishment of the Joint Worker/Management Health and Safety Committee and acts as an advisor of their Central Safety Committee.
2. Worksite Analysis and Accident Prevention: Through a proactive approach, manages the Hazard/Near-miss identification process and analyzes accident information, by identifying trends and key problem areas and communicating them to the Central Safety Committee and Senior Management in a timely manner. Partners with management to develop innovative solutions
to promote involvement in health and safety programs.
3. Training: Plans, prepares, conducts, and audits all health and safety training required by various provincial legislation. Maintains an up-to-date database of training credentials for all employees. Identifies gaps and seeks out resources to ensure employees comply with and remain up to date on required training.
4. Record Keeping & Reporting: Ensures  policies and procedures regarding the
completion of required documentation are adhered to in order to comply OHSA and Health & Safety Program for record keeping requirements.
5. Workers Compensation: Effectively manages the return to work/modified duty program and reviews monthly worker’s compensation cost reports and communicates relevant information to Sr. Management in a timely manner.
6. Health & Safety Program Review: Evaluates and updates as necessary, Health & Safety Program to ensure compliance with latest OHSA regulations. COR/ISO or equivalent – update and maintain as required the company safety certification programs.
7. COR/ISO – Update and maintain COR program 
8. WSIB Health & Safety Excellence Program (HESP) - complete annual Action plan and required element submissions, working with WSIB accredited provider to achieve potential yearly incentives. Education, Experience, Skills

1. Leadership: Motivates all project stakeholders to work towards achieving zero lost time injuries through morale building, resource coordination, and fostering a strong safety culture within the organization. Expresses clear expectations, determines & assesses employee’s abilities, provides opportunities to demonstrate capabilities by delegating full authority with
the latitude to carrying out Eastern H&S Policy. Also, provides ongoing feedback and appropriate resources to ensure safety.
2. Problem Solving & Conflict Resolution: Ability to break down problems & manage conflict by effectively dealing with issues in a professional manner. Able to proactively seek solutions and escalating issues when needed.
3. Listening, Understanding & Responding: Listens, understands, and responds appropriately to the concerns of others by being receptive to new information, seeking out the facts before drawing conclusions, and showing a willingness to see things from another person's perspective. After assessing the issue, takes the appropriate action to achieve resolution via verbal or written communication.
4. Confidence & Ownership: Presents him/herself in a confident and professional manner and takes ownership of issues and challenges as they arise. Able to make decisions (sometimes difficult or unpopular) without deferring to others and is decisive and assertive when needed.

Job Knowledge & Technical Skills:

1. Health & Safety: Expert knowledge of OHS Act & Regulations and the companies Safety program and a Competent Supervisor under the Ministry of Labour guidelines. Ability to enforce H & S policies and implement procedures with a "zero" tolerance stance in order to ensure a safe workplace.
2. Communication: Ensures professional, accurate, thorough and timely communication with respect to reports, legislative changes/requirements, and feedback from safety audits/inspections.
3. Computer Skills: Ability to proficiently use e-mail, Microsoft Office to maintain the Health & Safety Database and communicate information effectively to all stakeholders.

Initiative & Self Management:

1. Results Oriented: Sets goals and prioritizes in order to maximize the use of resources to deliver the Health and Safety Program. Maintains focus on the "big picture" and makes changes in work flow/methods or operations to improve performance and the delivery of the program. Able to predict emerging issues and manages all of the associated risks.
2. Problem Solving & Conflict Resolution: Ability to break down problems & manage conflict through mediation by effectively dealing with issues in a professional manner. Able to proactively seek solutions and escalating issues when needed.

Education, Experience and Skills:

1. Education: Post Secondary Education preferably in an Industry related discipline. Gold Seal Designation an asset or working towards achieving.
2. Certifications required: NCSO – National Construction Safety Officer and COR/ISO Internal Auditor Certified.
3. Experience: Minimum Five years experience in Health and Safety Management within the Construction Industry and well developed knowledge of the construction process, and management. Knowledge and understanding of Company and industry Health & Safety best practices, processes and performance standards.
