Working alongside the chief estimator, the estimator is responsible for the preparation of cost estimates for parking lots, road resurfacing, and general infrastructure work.
Duties:
- Develop a strategic and competitive plan for each tender alongside the chief estimator
- Guide the preparation of thorough, accurate and timely estimates, including the preparation and submission of bid documents and the development of clear written proposals and correspondence
- Accurate and timely interpretation of project drawings, specifications, supplier and subcontractor quotes, proposals, and other documentation
- Responsible for accurate take-off of quantities from project drawings and specifications
- Prepare detailed estimates from first principals using cost history and experience using existing estimating software systems following estimating policy, procedures and good practice
- Oversee quotations and proposals from suppliers and subcontractors, either directly or with the assistance of a junior estimator
- Assist project management group on project forecasting and costing out potential additional costs in claim situations or potential scope of work changes
- Follow-up of proposals to customers
- Establish and maintain relationships with existing and new suppliers, and subcontractors
- Attend site visits, pre-bid and pre-award meetings as required by the owner/engineer
- Assist project management group in starting up a project by chairing post-award meetings and attending pre-construction meetings
- Negotiate major purchase and subcontract agreements, prepare and review purchase orders and subcontract documents with project managers
- Accumulate, evaluate, and document historical cost data and construction procedures and methods
- Assist in maintenance and upgrade of the estimating database and software including analysis of field feedback on actual work performed
Your experience:
- 2-5 years of ongoing experience as a civil estimator in paving and infrastructure projects.
- Completion of post-secondary education with a degree or diploma related to Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Estimating
- Ability to read and interpret construction-related documents including plans, specifications, and other technical material
- Ability to time manage and create plans to meet multiple deadlines within a high-pressure work environment
- Experience with estimating software
- Proficiency using MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential, knowledge of using Bluebeam and scheduling software is also preferred
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment
- Adaptable to a flexible work schedule when required to meet deadlines
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to potential job sites as required
