Heavy Civil Estimator - $80,000 - $120,000 - Northern Ontario
Overview
Our clients are seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Estimator with 5+ years of proven expertise in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for infrastructure and utility projects up to $20m in value.
The role requires a strong background in earthworks, sewer and water, roadworks, and other civil scopes for local projects around the Township of Clearview and Sudbury. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting pre-construction efforts alongside the VP's, developing cost proposals, and working closely with VP's, project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure project success.
Key Responsibilities - Prepare detailed estimates for heavy civil projects including earthworks, sewer and water installation, roadworks, and other utility-related scopes.
- Analyze drawings, specifications, and tender documents to identify project requirements, risks, and opportunities.
- Perform quantity takeoffs, unit pricing, and cost analysis for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
- Coordinate and solicit pricing from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness.
- Develop bid proposals and assist in tender submissions, including presentation to senior management and clients.
- Maintain estimating databases, templates, and cost history for continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams to validate estimates and ensure smooth project handoff.
- Stay current with industry standards, market pricing, and construction methods to improve estimate accuracy.
- Support business development by identifying value engineering opportunities and contributing to project strategy.
Qualifications - Minimum 5 years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction (utilities, earthworks, sewer/water, and roadworks).
- Strong knowledge of construction drawings, specifications, and industry practices.
- Proficiency in estimating software and tools (e.g., HeavyBid, Hard Dollar, Bid2Win, or similar).
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with digital takeoff tools (e.g., Bluebeam, Accubid).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and negotiation abilities for coordinating with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams.
- Engineering, Construction Management, or related technical diploma/degree preferred.
