The job - Sustainability Lead (Data Centre)
This is a full-time, site-based Sustainability Lead position on a major new build data centre project located between Cottbus and Dresden in eastern Germany. You will own the sustainability agenda on this data centre, ensuring the project meets ambitious ESG, carbon and environmental performance targets while complying with all relevant regulations and client standards.
Key job responsibilities: - Develop and implement project-specific sustainability strategies and initiatives for a large, MEP-heavy data centre construction project.
- Lead sustainability assessments (e.g. embodied/operational carbon, resource and energy efficiency, waste and water management) throughout the project lifecycle.
- Manage sustainability-related documentation, tracking and reporting, including KPIs and performance dashboards for internal stakeholders and the end client.
- Coordinate and support certification processes (e.g. BREEAM, ISO 14001 or equivalent), including evidence gathering, audits and continuous improvement actions.
- Work closely with design, construction, procurement and commissioning teams to integrate low-carbon materials, circularity and sustainable site practices into all work packages.
- Provide training and toolbox talks to site teams and subcontractors, building a strong sustainability culture on this data centre job.
- Ensure full compliance with environmental legislation, permits and company procedures, proactively identifying and managing risks.
Your profile - Experience developing and delivering sustainability strategies for construction activities, ideally on data centre, high-tech industrial or large commercial projects.
- Familiarity with recognised certification systems and standards such as BREEAM and/or ISO 14001.
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and compliance in a construction/site environment.
- Solid project management skills, able to coordinate multiple sustainability workstreams on a live data centre project.
- Strong research, analytical and reporting skills, comfortable working with data to influence decisions.
- Collaborative mindset, able to work across disciplines (design, project management, commercial, MEP) to embed sustainable solutions.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering or a related field.
- Construction industry experience is a strong plus.
